Act now: Too many violent attacks to wait

The Allan Labor Government has denied legislation on multiple occasions to prohibit machetes here in Victoria, andon Friday night we saw another tragic death in a long list of violent attacks across the state.

The machete has become the weapon of choice in Victoria for offenderswho commit serious crimes like aggravated burglary, carjackings, assaults andother gang related crimes.

Victorians can't wait another nine months to stop the sale, importing or access of these weapons. It is too long, more lives will be lost, we will see more victims of violent home invasions and more machetes will be on the street.

Leader of the Opposition Brad Battin said: “This week in Parliament, the Liberals and Nationals will move to amend any legislation to ban machetes to make it immediate.

“Delaying the implementation to prohibit machetes will only result in more home invasions, more carjackings and sadly, more murders.

“Premier Allan states she is working on advice from police, the same advice given to her government over 12 months ago from then Chief Commissioner Shane Patton, advice she ignored before sacking him.

“Victorians are tired of a ‘too little too late’ Premier who only acts when the state is at breaking point.

“If the Premier followed the advice of the police when first elected as Premier, Victoria would already have tougher bail laws, machetes banned and our communities would be safer. Premier Allan's decision to ignore that advice has seen record increases in crime across Victoria.

“Labor can't manage crime and Victorians continue to pay the price.”
